Styling with Artwork
Artwork is the perfect way to showcase your individual personality, inject colour and helps to set the mood you desire in your home.
Artwork can help inspire a lot of styling decisions, it’s a great starting point. It can also be that finishing touch which makes your space feel complete. My biggest advice when selecting artwork is to take your time and have fun with it. I think it’s important that you don’t fill your walls with the first piece that you find. Allowing the time to consider how it will look and feel in your home will ensure it provides longevity.
My key tips on styling with artwork
1. INSPIRING YOUR COLOUR SELECTION
If you are working with existing artwork, let the colour palette within the piece inspire you. I personally like to choose an unsuspecting colour or two from my artwork to inspire my styling selections. Choosing softer, less obvious colours from artwork and introducing them through soft furnishings such as cushions and throws, creates a harmonious and cohesive look. Choosing bolder colours from the artwork will create more of a statement.
2. LEANING & LAYERING
This tip is especially helpful for renters and those that like to switch up their interior styling every so often. If you have a sideboard or bench to display items, consider leaning your artwork against the wall. It provides a relaxed and contemporary feel. Layering artwork using smaller and larger pieces together will create interest and depth to your space. If you aren’t sure if multiple pieces work together, choosing art from the same artist can help create a harmonious feel and they won’t compete against each other.
3. GO SMALL
Small artworks are my favourite styling go-to’s and are becoming more and more popular. I love the versatility of small canvases that you can place anywhere in your home. Small pieces such as 30x30cm are great styled on a bedside, layered on a bookcase, on a sideboard and on a shelf. Consider purchasing varied sized small pieces to create a gallery wall.
4. MIX IT UP
Artwork comes in so many forms; canvas, sketches, vintage posters, photography etc. If you want to create contrast and interest in your home, play around with all forms of artwork. Mixing up the type of frames is another great way to create contrast. Whilst the majority of my artwork is framed in oak timber, I like to break it up a bit with the use of white frames.
